Sydney diving, mapped and forecast
VIZ is a community of 15,000 divers, snorkellers and freedivers. We survey the dive sites, forecast the conditions, and publish the lot for nothing.
What VIZ is
More than a Facebook group: a philanthropic initiative with four mission goals, built on community-sourced ideas and pro bono work. We have no sponsors, we don't solicit donations and we don't seek grants.
Our aim is to be a leading example of a local community of underwater enthusiasts, producing peer-to-peer resources on safety, enjoyment, knowledge and sustainability.
What the community has made
- Precisely georeferenced underwater maps of the main dive sites, surveyed with a method we built ourselves
- Weekly dive site forecasts from a custom prediction model
- Citizen science: tracking ten species and sea turtle sightings from members' reports
- An information hub — bull sharks, Cabbage Tree Bay seagrass, the physics of waves, flash photography and fish, Pocillopora coral and DIY instruments
- A channel to the public sector, academia and industry
- Marine science on ABC Radio Sydney every week since 2020
- Heritage mapping, including admiralty anchors nobody had recorded
